How Our HVAC Cost Estimator Works

01

Tell Us About the Job

Choose what you’re replacing or installing. If you don’t know the system’s name, we’ll help you identify it.
02

Describe the Space and Work

Enter the square footage and any work you’re planning, such as replacing ducts. Choose “Not sure” for details you haven’t confirmed.
03

Get an Estimate

See an estimated cost and what it includes. If we can’t price your project, we’ll explain what to ask a contractor.

What Your Estimate Tells You

You’ll see a price range for equipment and installation, plus a cost breakdown when we have enough details. If you choose “Not sure,” the lower and higher prices may cover different equipment choices.

Work that needs a separate quote appears below the estimate. If you select work we can’t price, the amount shown is a subtotal. Ask the contractor to include that work before comparing complete project prices.

We don’t adjust prices for your location, subtract rebates or tax credits, or calculate local taxes separately.

How to Use Your Estimate

Print or copy the estimate to review with a contractor. Ask which possible extras your home needs before deciding how much to budget.

Request a written quote that lists the equipment, labor, and any ductwork or electrical work. Before comparing totals, check that each contractor is pricing the same work.

Frequently Asked Questions

We cover common replacements in existing homes: central AC, furnaces, selected heat-pump and AC/furnace combinations, standard gas or oil hot-water boilers, and conventional packaged units. We also estimate installations of up to five wall-mounted mini-split units connected to one outdoor unit. Manufactured-home estimates cover single-wide, 2.5–3.5-ton packaged replacements. Other installations, repairs, new construction, and changes in system type or fuel need a contractor’s quote.
No. It does not diagnose problems or price repairs. If you don’t know whether the system needs replacing, ask a technician to check it before budgeting for new equipment.
Choose “Help me identify my system.” We’ll ask how it heats or cools the rooms. You may need to check an equipment label or ask a contractor to answer some questions.
No. Square footage helps us check whether the project fits this calculator’s coverage; it does not size the equipment or adjust equipment prices. It also determines whether we can include an allowance for full duct replacement. To choose the equipment size, a contractor needs to calculate how much heating and cooling your home needs. Ask for a load calculation, which also accounts for insulation, windows, and the local climate.
Ordinary equipment connections are included. For site-built homes, we can add a broad allowance for small accessible duct repairs or full replacement of existing ducts serving 1,000–2,499 sq. ft. Full duct replacement outside that size range, partial replacement, first-time ducts, manufactured-home ductwork, and electrical upgrades need separate quotes. The result shows which work is included and which still needs pricing.
A contractor can inspect your home and price the exact equipment and work it needs. Local labor rates, equipment choices, and problems found during the inspection can change the cost.
