How Does the Mass Save Program Work?

Mass Save is offered through participating electric and gas providers, rather than as one statewide rebate with a single set of rules. Its sponsors are Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, and Unitil.

  1. Confirm Your Participating Provider

Search by ZIP code and check which company sponsors your electric or gas account.

  1. Find the Offer for Your Project

Choose the specific rebate, discount, recycling payment, income-based program, or financing option you plan to use.

  1. Review the Eligibility Rules

Check the requirements for the equipment, property, income level, contractor, and project dates.

  1. Complete Any Required Preparation

Some offers require a Home Energy Assessment, equipment verification, or weatherization before the incentive can be approved. These steps do not apply to every offer.

  1. Purchase or Install the Eligible Product

Follow the offer’s rules for approved models and participating contractors. Keep the invoice and any documents needed for your claim.

  1. Receive the Savings

Some discounts are applied when you buy. Other offers require an online or mail-in application after installation.

Who Is Eligible for Mass Save Rebates and Offers?

Living in Massachusetts does not automatically qualify you for every Mass Save offer. Eligibility starts with your utility account, then depends on the rules for the specific upgrade or program.

Your Energy Company Must Participate in Mass Save

Your home generally needs a current residential electric or gas account with a Mass Save provider. Customers of municipal utilities may have fewer options, although some can qualify through a participating natural gas provider.

The Correct Account Must Be Used

Some offers are tied to the electric account, while others require the gas account. Use the account connected to the property where the equipment will be installed.

Homeowners and Renters Have Different Options

Renters can qualify for certain product rebates, energy assessments, and ConnectedSolutions rewards. Improvements to the building may require the landlord’s approval or participation. The HEAT Loan is available only to homeowners.

The Property Must Fit the Program

Many residential equipment offers apply to homes with one to four units. Larger buildings may need to use a multifamily program, although some offers provide separate rules for properties with five or more units.

Household Income May Increase Benefits

Eligible households may receive larger rebates or no-cost improvements through Mass Save’s income-based programs. These pathways require income verification and may follow a different process from a standard rebate claim.

Each Offer Has Its Own Limits

The product must meet the published efficiency standard and appear on any required qualified product list. An offer may also limit how many rebates one account or property can receive.

The Purchase and Installation Must Fall Within the Offer Period

Check the eligible dates before ordering equipment or starting work. The installation and rebate submission may have separate deadlines, so keep the invoice and proof of the completed project.

What Home Improvements and Products Have Mass Save Offers?

Mass Save covers several types of home energy upgrades, from heating systems to smaller household products. The offers below are among the most commonly searched, but they do not represent every rebate or discount service available.

Air-Source Heat Pumps and Mini-Splits

A mini-split is a type of air-source heat pump, so it falls under the same Mass Save program. The rebate path depends on how the new system will heat the home.

Whole-home rebates apply when the heat pump becomes the home’s only heating and cooling system. Partial-home rebates allow an existing boiler or furnace to remain in use. The basic rebate covers projects such as replacing an older heat pump or adding a system to a space that was not previously heated or cooled.

Income-qualified households may have access to a separate, enhanced incentive.

Air-to-Water and Ground-Source Heat Pumps

Mass Save also has separate offers for air-to-water and ground-source systems. Air-to-water heat pumps transfer heat into a water-based heating system. Ground-source systems draw heat from the ground and follow their own rebate structure.

These projects have more technical equipment and installation rules than a general overview can cover clearly. Check the official page for the system you are considering before requesting quotes.

Heat-Pump Water Heaters

The current Mass Save water-heater offer applies to qualifying heat-pump models. It does not cover every type of water heater replacement.

You may receive the rebate when your installer buys the unit from a participating distributor. Instant savings are also available through participating retailers and the Mass Save Marketplace.

When an eligible unit is purchased elsewhere without the discount, the homeowner can submit a claim through the rebate portal or use the mail-in form. A licensed plumber must complete installation. Homeowners can also review water heater financing for costs not covered by the rebate.

Smart and Programmable Thermostats

Mass Save has two separate ways to save on thermostats. The first reduces the cost of buying a qualifying programmable or smart model. You can receive the savings through a rebate claim, an eligible retailer, or the Mass Save Marketplace.

ConnectedSolutions is a separate program for supported smart thermostats connected to central cooling or a heat pump. It provides an enrollment incentive, followed by an annual reward when the household continues participating in peak-demand events. These payments should not be combined and presented as one thermostat rebate.

Room Air Conditioners

The room air conditioner offer applies to qualifying window and portable units. It does not represent a general rebate for a new central air-conditioning system.

Eligible customers can claim the rebate after purchasing an ENERGY STAR-certified unit. Instant discounts may also be available through the Mass Save Marketplace or participating stores. The offer is limited to customers of participating electric providers and places a yearly limit on the number of units per account.

Refrigerator, Freezer, and Dehumidifier Offers

Mass Save treats appliance recycling and appliance replacement as different programs. The recycling offer pays customers to turn in an inefficient appliance that still works. Qualifying refrigerators and freezers include no-cost pickup. A working dehumidifier can be added to that collection.

Income-qualified households may instead receive a replacement when their current appliance is inefficient. This process begins with a Home Energy Assessment. The program may cover refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, window air conditioners, or clothes washers.

Do You Need an Energy Assessment, Weatherization, or a Participating Contractor?

Home Energy Assessment

A Home Energy Assessment is required for income-qualified home upgrades and certain projects financed through the HEAT Loan. Mass Save recommends an assessment for some other HEAT Loan projects, even when it is not mandatory.

An assessment is not ordinarily required for:

  • Thermostat rebates
  • Room air conditioner rebates
  • ConnectedSolutions enrollment
  • Appliance recycling
  • Heat pump water-heater rebates

Weatherization

Weatherization improves insulation and seals areas where air escapes. Whole-home heat pump rebates require the property to meet Mass Save’s weatherization standard.

A new assessment may not be needed if the home already qualifies because of its age or previously completed improvements. Partial-home heat pumps follow different rules and may qualify for an additional incentive when recommended weatherization work is completed.

Contractor and Installation Requirements

Heat pump rebates require a contractor in the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network. Homeowners may also request verification before installation to confirm that the proposed system meets the rebate requirements.

A licensed plumber must install heat pump water heaters. The plumber does not need to be part of the heat pump network. Thermostats and room air conditioners generally do not require professional installation.

Heat pump rebates use a post-installation claim. Smaller products may use either an instant discount or a claim after purchase. HEAT Loan projects require Mass Save authorization before work begins.

How to Apply for a Mass Save Rebate or Offer

The application process depends on whether the savings are applied at purchase, claimed afterward, or provided through a separate program.

Instant Discounts and Marketplace Offers

For an in-store discount, first confirm your eligibility through the Mass Save instant rebates portal. Enter your utility account information to receive a code, then present it at the register when you buy the qualifying product.

The Mass Save Marketplace applies eligible discounts during an online purchase. New users must connect their electric or gas account before they can see the available savings.

Online and Mail-In Rebate Claims

Submit a rebate claim when you purchased eligible equipment without receiving an instant discount. Most applicable offers let you apply through the online rebate portal or mail a completed form with the supporting documents.

The exact documents depend on the offer, but you may need:

  • A paid, itemized invoice
  • The manufacturer and exact model number
  • The purchase or installation date
  • Contractor details when professional installation is required
  • Any required verification form
  • Your utility account information
  • Proof that the equipment meets the program standard

Recycling and Income-Qualified Programs

Appliance recycling follows a separate process, and the offer applies only to certain working appliances. Eligible refrigerators and freezers are collected through a scheduled pickup, while dehumidifiers may be added to the pickup or taken to a participating event. The payment is processed after the appliance is accepted.

Income-qualified upgrades also begin outside the standard rebate portal. After confirming eligibility, the household completes a no-cost Home Energy Assessment. Mass Save then identifies qualifying improvements and arranges any approved replacements.

How to Use the Mass Save Rebate Portal and Check Your Status

Use the Mass Save rebate portal to manage eligible online claims.

  • Submit or update a claim: Upload your application, correct details, or add missing documents.
  • Check the status: Sign in to see whether the claim is processing or needs more information.
  • Follow up if delayed: Online claims usually take six to eight weeks. Contact the rebate program if more than eight weeks have passed.

These timelines apply to standard rebate claims. Instant discounts are applied at purchase, while appliance-recycling payments follow a separate process and may take six to eight weeks after pickup.

Why Is a Mass Save Rebate Delayed, Rejected, or Found Ineligible?

Delays often come from missing information. A rejection usually means the claim does not meet a program rule.

Common problems include:

  • Account issue: The account is not residential, is linked to the wrong provider, or does not match the offer.
  • Ineligible equipment: The model is not approved or lacks the required certification.
  • Installer issue: The project required a participating contractor or licensed installer.
  • Missing project steps: A required assessment, weatherization work, or verification form was not completed.
  • Incomplete documents: The invoice or application is missing information, or the details do not match.
  • Missed deadline: The purchase, installation, or application fell outside the offer period.
  • Offer limit reached: The account has already used the maximum number of rebates.
  • Offers cannot be combined: The equipment received another incentive that the program does not allow.

Before You Buy

  • Confirm that your account qualifies.
  • Check the exact model.
  • Review contractor and project requirements.
  • Check all deadlines.
  • Confirm which incentives can be combined.

How to Maximize Your Mass Save Savings

Use available incentives in this order to reduce the amount left to pay.

  1. Start with enhanced assistance. If your household meets the income rules, apply through that program before paying for the work.
  2. Claim any project bonuses. Some partial-home heat pump projects qualify for added savings based on system sizing or completed weatherization. These bonuses must be requested with the main rebate.
  3. Check for other permitted incentives. Do not assume an instant Mass Save discount and a post-purchase Mass Save rebate can both be claimed for the same equipment.
  4. Use the HEAT Loan for eligible costs. It may help finance part of the project cost, and you can still apply for any available rebate.
  5. Apply manufacturer promotions. Confirm that the promotion is allowed before combining it with another incentive. A heat pump water heater rebate, for example, cannot be paired with another utility offer for the same unit.
  6. Finance what remains. Renovate can connect Massachusetts homeowners with contractors that may offer HVAC financing through third-party lenders. Renovate is not a lender; credit decisions are made by third-party lenders.

2026 tax note: Do not include the former federal Section 25C credit in your estimate. It is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

How to Find a Qualified Contractor

A contractor can be licensed without participating in Mass Save. Program participation also does not guarantee the quality of their work. Look at credentials, relevant experience, and program status separately.

  1. Start with the Mass Save directory. When participation is required, use the official contractor search or Heat Pump Installer Network to create a shortlist.
  2. Verify their current status. Confirm that the contractor still appears in the required network before hiring them.
  3. Compare itemized quotes. Get two or three estimates for projects where you choose the installer. Make sure each quote covers the same equipment and scope of work.
  4. Ask who handles the paperwork. Confirm whether the contractor will complete rebate forms, provide required records, and coordinate any inspections.
  5. Explore additional local options. Review how to choose an HVAC contractor, then use Renovate to find contractors in Massachusetts. Verify Mass Save participation independently before choosing one.

FAQs

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Mass Save Rebate?

Online rebate claims usually take six to eight weeks to process. Mailed applications may take longer. Check the portal for updates, and contact the rebate program if more than eight weeks have passed since you submitted a complete claim.

Is a Mini-Split Covered by the Mass Save Heat-Pump Rebate?

Yes. A mini-split is an air-source heat pump and may qualify under the same rebate program. The amount depends on whether the system heats the whole home, part of the home, or serves another eligible purpose. The equipment and installation must meet the current program rules.

Can I Combine Mass Save Offers With Other Incentives?

Sometimes. Each offer has its own rules for combining savings. A manufacturer promotion or approved discount may be allowed, while another utility incentive may not be. For example, Mass Save does not allow its heat pump water heater rebate to be combined with another utility offer for the same equipment.

What Equipment Qualifies for Mass Save Rebates?

Equipment must meet the efficiency standard for the offer and may need to appear on an approved product list. Qualification can also depend on the exact model and installation date. Check the current offer page before buying, since eligible products, purchase windows, and submission deadlines can change.

Can Renters Qualify for Mass Save Offers?

Yes. Renters may qualify for product rebates, energy assessments, appliance programs, and ConnectedSolutions rewards. Work that changes the building may require the landlord’s approval or participation. Eligibility also depends on the property and utility account, so renters should review the terms for the specific offer.

What Happens If My Rebate Application Is Rejected?

Read the notice or check the portal to find the reason for the decision. If documents are missing, the program may request them before continuing. A claim may remain ineligible when the equipment, installer, account, or timing does not meet the offer rules. Contact the rebate program if the explanation is unclear.
